STALKING THE CARAVAN Summary:

AFGHANISTAN 1971. The rugged routes to Kabul teemed with worldwide youth in search of cheap drugs and enlightenment. With the idyllic dreamers came hard core criminals. Sent to Kabul to take on the criminals was Federal Narcotics Agent, Terrence Burke. Working undercover, often without backup, Burke dismantled smuggling operations in Afghanistan and India. He used "renditions" to return fugitives like Timothy Leary to the U.S. and teamed with the Soviet KGB to close a drug route through the USSR. He challenged criminals in the Royal Palace and the Afghan Police. The issues he portrays in Afghanistan are still confronting us today.

STORIES FROM THE SECRET WAR Summary:

In the early 1960s, a handful of CIA paramilitary officers led a secret war in the mountains of Laos against North Vietnamese and Lao Communist forces.  One of those secret warriors, Terrence Burke, gives a vivid account of primitive guerrilla warfare that eventually led to an attempt by the North Vietnamese to capture him.  Burke’s stories of that war are of gritty and often deadly hit and run tactics against the North Vietnamese, attempted rescues of downed pilots, and daily survival far from American support.

No Man Left Behind Series by National Geographic.

On Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 9:00 pm EST, Nat Geographic featured one of the episodes from former Acting Administrator Terry Burke's first book, Stories From The Secret War.  The story is of a US Navy pilot shot down over Laos by the NVN. Terry, then a CIA paramilitary officer, and three Air America pilots attempted a rescue of the pilot deep in enemy territory in an unarmed aircraft, but were driven off by the NVN who were using the Navy pilot as bait.  The pilot remained a prisoner for months until he bravely effected his own escape and evaded recapture, finally reaching a friendly outpost.  The ensuing rescue of the pilot by Terry and their flight to safety to Thailand is one of the highlights of this story.
